The Influence of Color

Today's color combination is quite, obviously, turquoise and hues of yellow.  I had a discussion with a friend years ago, about using colors as verbs in our writing. Aside from "feeling blue" as a form of sadness, I couldn't really justify using color as a verb, or even a noun. I know cliches exist, red=rage, green=envy and the like, but wanted more proof than that.

Then, he wrote a lovely prose that ended with something along the lines of, "he reached out to the sky, and he could feel blue." It made perfect sense and changed my mind about the use of color as more than just imagery, but as a way we wrap ourselves up in something greater then needing to name or objectify it outright.

My husband once pointed out to me, that when ever we go shopping, I always pick up something that perfectly coordinates with my current outfit. If I am wearing my muted orange sweater, everything will be orange or caramels. If I am wearing a pale pink blouse, then all I pick up will be pinks. If I'm wearing gray (which is the usual choice), then everything will be... you get the idea.

I found that interesting how I was magnetized to the same color I had been attracted to in the mornings. How, I can look perfectly fine in one thing, but change it because the color isn't suiting me that day and makes me feel "too bright", "too down", "too noticable"...

It is amazing to realize how deeply influencing color can be. If you could feel a color today, what would it be? What color do you surround yourself with when you are feeling sad, happy, confused, energized?

Natural Pastel Beauty

In keeping with this weeks accidental pastel theme, I wanted to focus a touch on soft, ethereal beauty. As a stylist and make-up artist, I haven't excercised my creativity lately in this way, so my gift certificate to Ulta will be put to good use this week. (Thanks, Mom!)

To get the look, I wanted to start with this lovely pastel makeup. It's so colorful and soft, the nude lips and simple, swept back hair keep it simple and pure. Tutorials : the pastel look, shimmery smokey eye, dramatic lips and lashes,  white frosted eyes, and dramatic basic black eyeliner.
Why does this pastel smudge work? Because the colors are shimmery, blended, in the same color family with soft lines under the brows, and the colors compliment the eye color. I've seen people attempt to acheive this that end up looking more like mermaid costume club makeup, such as here.

A low, easy, soft double twisted bun would work nicely with such bold eye colors, don't you think? Directions on how to get the look on Cookie Mag here.

Throw on a soft blouse or light sweater, a colorful and chunky bangle in blues and greens,

Add your choice of bottoms, could be anything dressy from a colorful skirt, or laid back such as some lightly distressed cropped jeans with some green vintage espadrills and you are ready to go with your neutrally colorful look.

Petals, Ruffles and Pinks

spring 2009 fashion show

Sometimes, it is okay to dress up and be pretty for no apparent reason. Just because your day is filled with mundane tasks, crying babies, barking dogs, laundry piles to tackle, errands to run and so forth, doesn't mean you can't grab a gorgous clutch, blossomed heels, and a drapey, flowy skirt that has you swimming in layers of tulle, satin and silk.

So, I dare you, to put on something fancy, beautiful, lovely, do the smokey eye, strut to your mailbox to check the mail, and greet the world in your finest.

Or, if you have no where to go, get dolled up anyways. It is amazing how soft styling and feminine layers can enhance your mood during a rather boring, taxing, sad, or just one of those blah days. Interesting how, all of my lovely photos are in shades of pinks and peaches. Totally unintentional, yet truly inspirational.

Shoes, Glorious Shoes

betcha you can make these with the beacon fabri-tac perm adhesive in my last tutorial!

Today was a get it done day. No, of course I don't mean laundry... though I, with the help of the hubs did manage to run a load of dishes and put freshly washed (okay sitting out for 2 days) slipcovers back on our couches.

But today, was the day where we went out as a family, ran mad errands, visitng the pet store for flea control and fell in love with many sweet critters since it was adoption day. Did you know I used to work at a vet clinic... oh the things I have seen! The horrors!

Well, a large part of our day was shopping for shoes. The boys both lost the only pairs they will wear which means the young one has been barefoot for the past several weeks and the older one has been wearing his massively large cowboy boots when he isn't barefoot. Don't get me wrong, we have plenty of shoes, the boys just refuse to wear them.

I of course, found some shoes as well, but buyers remorse has kicked in on one pair in particular and I will be returning them next week. So, even though my shoes are not red and aqua, I thought the theme was appropriate since those are wonderful colors and it was a wonderful day. (even though I massacred dinner and the sweet husband had to salvage it for me because I just gave up)
