DIY Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles Halloween Costume

This is an easy, no sew project that everyone loves, especially our boys!! We got so many compliments! It's just a little time consuming to make, so don't do it right before you have to leave to go trick or treating, like I usually do. Since it's a no pattern design, you just have to "eyeball it" and make lots of revisions on cuts. Maybe cut out cereal boxes first would be a good idea.  Look at lots of Sonic pictures to get the idea, or just use my placement for the triangle spikes.

Materials:

* blue fleece (or red for Knuckles)
* foam, about the 1 1/2 inch or 2 inch thick kind. I bought one large sheet.
* sharp scissors
* red small section of red fleece or 2 pieces of red felt (for shoes)
* one piece of yellow felt (for shoe buckles)
* white fleece, or low pile fur (for tummy, ears and strip on shoes)
* strong headband
* elastic (for under the chin, and shoe straps)
* hot glue gun
* lots of hot glue
* sweat pants and shirt (blue for Sonic, red for Knuckles)
* yellow tubing for ring (can spray paint yellow, I think we cut down a hula hoop and tape it together)

Directions.

Fleece is great because it does not fray, and you don't need to hem. I originally had the spikes going down the back, but it wasn't  comfortable, and sort of flopped, so I took the back apart, cut off the triangles and glued them to the headpiece. For the head piece, I simply cut out a large square of fleece and tucked, cut and glued on angles to make it helmet like. (Except for Knuckles, I didn't fit it to the head like this, I kept his a little longer and rolled the edges and glued them like that). I put it on my child's head to see where it sit would sit on a headband, than glued it on the headband.

Next, cut foam pieces into triangles, with slight curved sides. Cut fleece to fit and hot glue fleece to your triangles. To make a nice 'edge', glue fleece strips to outline it out, I slightly rolled it under to make it look more like a sewn finish. Look at your Sonic pictures and glue your triangles down in a pattern closest to the photos, or how I did mine.

Knuckles doesn't need these triangles. I simply rolled pieces of red fleece into 'tubes' and glued them to the underside of the headpiece. Once the head piece is shaped and done, put on child's head and add your elastic strap under the chin. I covered mine in fleece, you don't have too.

For the body, cut an oval tummy and glue it on the shirt. Sonic has flesh colored arms, so you could cut the sleeves off of the shirt, but I didn't mind the long sleeves since it was a little chilly. For the shoe covers, I simply laid the fabric over the shoes, cut a hole out over it and glue pieces together to look like Sonic's shoes (like the white band and yellow buckle). (Do not glue ON the shoe, this is just a simple shoe cover!) Glue your elastic down under the sides of the red fleece and simple slip them on over the shoe, than have your child put their shoes on.

I added this project to Cut Out + Keep. (And yes, I realize the title is badly misspelled!) If you do it, I would love to see it!

Inspired Blog: LifefLix

I love the  room redo shown above. So hodge podge, simple, and full of personality.

I discovered a sweet blog awhile back by Marichelle called Lifeflix. She has the most beautiful baby ever (who wore the most adorable owl Halloween costume and who also has the most adorable nursery) and her blog is really a breath of fresh air. I'm loving her Operation Lose Baby Fat series right now. If you love adorable and simple crafts (like the  clouds craftstwig mobile and kid's animal masks), healthy and delicious recipes, and original eye candy, then do visit.

Homefront: Cinco de Mayo Dress Up

Over the weekend, we attended a little birthday party for me and a nephew and a baby shower for my sis. But this post is about the Cinco De Mayo themed party we attended. There was a piñata of course at a few of these and lots and lots of good Mexican food and authentic dulches Mexicanos (candy!) I had my first taste of yummy, perfected, homemade flan (made by her) and other authentic treats.

I wore this, yes I did. I actually own 3 of these Mexican embroidered vintage dresses. This long cream one, a short hot pink one and a short white one with pale pink embroidery (it's very pretty).

I love them all, but have never worn them. I wore this long one with a vintage red belt, vintage red cowboy boots I got at an auction and these amazingly (huge, pointy, uncomfortable) red enameled flower clip on earrings. My ears hurt just thinking about them, but oh the cuteness.

Many people remarked how 'festive' I looked as I was pretty much the most colorful thing there (aside from the piñata), though I wonder if that mostly meant 'ridiculous'? Oh well. It's not everyday we get to dress up as a Spanish Rose (even if we DO look a little ridiculous). At least I didn't go all dio de los muertos with a  sugar skull, now eh?

For those of you wondering, Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday celebrated in the United States and primarily limited to the state of Puebla in Mexico. The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. (thanks, wikipedia) as my knowledge of Mexico is little more than a brief visit to Tijuana). Cinco de Mayo is also my little brother's birthday... Happy Birthday Jae!!

Halloween Costumes part 1

Last night, we celebrated my hubby's job offer that we have been praying for, for quite some time! We had dinner, got hot chocolate, then we were going to take the boys to a Halloween costume shop. My 3 year old REALLY wants to be Sonic the hedghog, so I figured I may find something I can cut up and reuse. But, once we arrived, it was 5 mins till closing and it was a MADHOUSE in there! A flood of about 15 people {screaming teens} ran in right before the store locked the doors and tons of crazed people were coming out with bags in tow.

No thank you, I am shopping online this year! While many of us love the handmade aspect or diy-ing the outfits ourselves, a lot of you prefer traditional costumes that you know you can get several sizes (in case your whole family wants to be ninjas or something) without the uncertainty of custom orders, or good intentions of doing it yourself, taking the back burner due to life being hectic. Also, sometimes, a good diy costume still needs commercial accessories to make it complete.

So, here is Child Costumes. Easy to navigate website, lots of cute choices for teens and under for both costumes and accessories. Plus, the related accessories all show up on the one page of the costume so you don't have to keep searching and searching for those blasted matching gloves. And you can shop safely with your kid in your lap because they don't have oversexed or too scary costumes like they do with adult shops.

Enjoy your browse around Child Costumes! Homemade costume part 2 will be coming up soon!

Beauty is Because

Because over 300 of my brand new revamp photos of my shop were deleted before I had a chance to use them, because I wish I had spent more time behind the camera on photo shoots, because I wish I knew how to sew gorgeous clothing, because I wish I spent more time on stage when I had the chance... and because I love fashion, historic costuming, gowns, dancing, drama, theatre, tulle, silk, feathers, men in knickers, passionately angry females, art, photography, young romance, beautifully staged upset, powdered wigs, choreography and muted yet lively and lush colors in whites, creams and golds... this photoshoot just had to be posted today. Yet~ does there really need to be a reason?
