Homefront: Something out of Nothing

I went a-garage sale-ing and found a huge pile of fake berries and such for about $5 (though the bag of awesome Christmas beaded garland was thrown out when I discovered it had a massive cat urine smell). When it came time to create some Thanksgiving centerpieces, I had plenty of stuff to use.

Only there wasn't much of any one kind of pick to pull any actual design concept together. By starting with a base of the berry garlands, and just working my way up, I think the little creations came out very sweet and festive indeed.

~Arrangement 1~

a bunch of nothingness

a bunch of weird yellow things

pinecones and leaves are nice

a white feathered bird, glittered acorns and a feathered pick adds some balance

~Arrangement 2~

For the second arrangement, I'll spare you the details, but here is my "spread" of choices:

almost finished...

a nest, bird and some berries complete it (though, I wish I had cut off that weird daisy)

~Thanksgiving display, on my overcrowded bar~

* yes, this post is 4 months overdue, but I had to write it so I could delete my pictures ;)  But, the concept here can apply to any season, with any type of riff raff you have strung around the place.  Nester also has some good advice and ideas on making a centerpiece with things you have.

There's a Super Hero Kid in You

Perhaps this post is inspired by my little boys, or the fact that after watching hours of the original Astro Boy, we saw  the movie (which was an interesting mix between A.I., Lord of the Flies and Wall-E).

So, you super heros of craft-opolis, get started on your hero logo t-shirt with Ambrosia Girl's nifty screen printing tutorial and visit her (non hero specific) superhero party ideas!

Create a coat rack wall using salvaged drawer fronts to hang those super hero capes. (or use wood planks and interesting knobs if you don't feel like leaving a beat up old dresser nekkid)

Immerse yourself in Monster Gallery's grunge pop robotic hero Japan-esque pop art prints

Then, enjoy a slice of robotic cake love with a Threadless design Threadcakes cutie. (okay, so he's not technically a 'superhero' but a sweet little introverted robot... but Astro boy was robot and superhero, so robot's are okay, plus he's cute and the colors match, so why not include the little guy!?

Mobile Finery. Hanging by a Thread

Mobiles. Gravity gracing, trinket laden, movable works of kinetic whimsy. They can be modern in design, vintage or organic. They can be colorful for use in nurseries or playrooms, or elegant enough for a centerpiece in a living room. They can be romantic and serene for a bedroom, or cluttered and crazy for a craft room. They can be a sophisticated and intricate piece of art, or a quick kid friendly craft.

You can purchase one made from specialty materials and expert craftsmanship, or you can create your own using bits of fabric or lace, tiny treasures, craft or homemade birds and nests, feathers, seashells, antique spoons, tiny bones, paper butterflies, paper anything, origami, glittered stars, photographs, fishing line, ribbon, embroidery hoops, wire, twigs. (Three tutorials in this post alone!) I have seen them in many themes, cars, flowers, magic shows, circus, sewing room, holiday, retro kitchen...

What a better way to enhance a corner with a grouping of lovely and little items? In the world of mobiles, the sky is the limit, truly. Even more mobile hangery ideas here at sew mama sew.  I know what I will be doing this weekend. Ready, Set, Collect!
